For collecting data directly at and transporting quickly from synchrotrons to home for further processing, external drives are ideally suited. These drives have two type of interfaces: FireWire400 (aka, IEEE 1394 drive or i-LINK drive) and USB2. They support high transfer rate of 400 mbps, hot-swappable, hot-pluggable, and are compact.
