3-D Structure of Muscle Proteins and Filaments

Bruce A. J. Baumann (Sandy) has pursued an unusual path to get to the position of Post-Doc at the Taylor Lab. After initially attending graduate school in Physics at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) he joined the United States Navy as an Engineering Specialist He served on both surface craft, submarines and various shore tours where he designed and repaired same, for 27 years.

After retiring from the Navy, he went to the Institute of Molecular Biophysics at FSU where he did research on skeletal. Smooth and insect flight muscle at Dr. P. Fajers Laboratory.

Upon receiving his doctorate in 2003 Dr Baumann transferred to the Laboratory of Dr. Ken Taylor where he is presently pursuing studies on the structure and function of smooth muscle utilizing cryo electron microscopy.

Since 1997 Dr. Baumann has collaborated with Dr Mike Reedy at Duke University on the structure and function of insect flight muscle using X-ray fiber diffraction.

Principal Research Interests: Structure and function of smooth and striated and insect flight muscle utilizing cryo-EM, EPR, ST-EPR and x-ray fiber diffraction.
