Course Description: This is the second semester of a
two semester sequence that introduces the general concepts of Biochemistry to
the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student. I will teach this course with an emphasis on chemical
and biochemical principles and attempt to minimize the amount of memorization. The
course covers a tremendous amount of material; DO NOT FALL BEHIND in your
reading or in doing your homeworks.
Office Hours: I will have regularly scheduled
office hours from 1-2 pm MWF. I will make every possible effort to meet with
you outside of my office hours, but only if you schedule an appointment. Please
email me to set up all appointments as that facilitates getting into my
calendar. DO NOT just stop by outside of
scheduled office hours. I won’t have time to meet with you due to my other
commitments this semester.
Textbook: Biochemistry 3rd Edition by Garrett & Grisham;
recommend supplement with Instant Notes
in Biochemistry by B.D. Hames and N.M. Hooper;
available on the internet.
Grading:
There will be four hourly exams and one final. Each hourly exam will be
worth 100 points; the final will be cumulative and worth 200 points. All exams
will be essay style. See my web page for sample exams from BCH 4053. The lowest
score for the hourly exams will be dropped so there will be no make-up exams.
The remaining three exam scores will be added to your final exam score and
divided by 500 total points to obtain your final score. The
Final Exam is scheduled from 5:30-7:30 pm, Tuesday, December 13. Your final score will be curved based on the
class average. There may be homework
assignments but they will not be graded. Tentative exam dates are given in the
Lecture Schedule on page 2. Note that these dates are not firm and final dates will
be announced in class.
Attendance:
I will not take attendance in class. However, you are strongly
encouraged to attend class everyday. Experience with teaching BCH4053 over the
past decade has shown a strong correlation between class attendance and final
grade. In other words, your final grade will be significantly higher if you
attend class every scheduled period.
Academic Honor Code:
I expect each of you to follow the academic honor code as outlined in
the Student Handbook and available on the web (http://www.fsu.edu/Books/Student-Handbook/2003codes/honor.html).
Essentially, you are expected (1) to
uphold the highest standards of academic integrity in the student's own work,
(2) to refuse to tolerate violations of academic integrity in the University
community, and (3) to foster a high sense of integrity and social
responsibility on the part of the University community.
