Protein Expression Facility
The FacilityThe production of biological molecules and macromolecular assemblies in the large quantities needed for structural studies is a major step in structural biology projects, requiring expertise, specialized equipment, a specially designed laboratory and considerable expenditures of time and effort. In recognition of this need, the Protein Expression was established and Dr. Joan Hare was hired to oversee the development of the facility. The peopleThe Protein Expression Facility located in KLB 312A-G is headed by the facility director, Dr. Joan Hare. She screens all project applications for suitability for the Protein Expression Facility and for biosafety considerations. AccessoriesEach room is equipped to provide for all the basic culture functions within that room, including a biosafety cabinet, and incubator. Additional, but separate, incubator space is provided for roller-bottle cultures and the large-scale 15- to 30-liter culture vessels. A common area for visual inspection of cultures by microscopy (inverted phase contrast microscopes, and an Olympus digital time lapse) adjoins the culture rooms. Dedicated areas within the controlled-access perimeter of the facility provide for media preparation; cleaning and preparation of sterile glassware; cold storage of media, reagents, and samples; and ultra-low-temperature freezer for permanent storage of stock cell lines.
